Tourists and sightseers today are flocking to Marina del Rey to view the largest vessel they've ever seen docked at a harbor. The motor yacht Luna, the world’s largest expedition yacht, is owned by Russian multi-billionaire Roman Abramovich.
Stretching a total of 377 feet in length, the superyacht is in a class all its own. In addition to abounding luxury from deck to deck, it features two helicopter pads and a tall high-tech communications tower.
The German-built vessel is designed to cover great distances without having to refuel. The big girl is also able to handle inclement weather conditions and other opposing forces Mother Nature decides to throw at her while at sea.
Abramovich is reportedly traveling with an all-British security staff and crew no less than 50 strong.
The 46-year-old tycoon purchased the state-of-the-art yacht for a reported $200 million while awaiting delivery of his other mode of water transportation - motor yacht Eclipse, the world's largest megayacht.
Abramovich, a self-made man who invested wisely in the steel industry and other smart endeavors, is currently the 68th wealthiest man in the world.
No one knows how long Abramovich will remain in the area. Observers say they have seen Luna scooting back and forth between Marina del Rey and Santa Catalina Island, a resort and film location site located some 22 miles southwest of L.A.'s mainland.
